Stovetop Popcorn Poppers – My Review

I have a Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper that I absolutely love.  This is my go-to popper mostly because there are less unpopped kernels in the end of the process. And the seasoning that we get for our theatre style popcorn is sooo good.

When I make my caramel popcorn, I generally search through the popcorn, inch by inch, ensuring that there are no kernels left.  I have learned the hard way by breaking a tooth and having to have dental surgery to repair it.  And of course, this was at Christmas time and their office was closed.  Merry Christmas!  So I always do my family and friends the courtesy and make sure that it is completely safe to eat.

I used to use an air popper that goes on the counter top, but the cord would get hot and there would be popped corn as well as hot kernels flying around my kitchen.  When I was using this method of popping my corn, I would have to sift through the popped corn between each batch as there were so many unpopped kernels.  I figured it was time to retire this popper, since I was almost burning my hand just by unplugging it from the wall.

After the air popping style, I evolved into using the EasyPop Popcorn Maker.  This one lasted me a couple of years, but then the motor or something inside it stopped working.  The centre piece would still rotate along the bottom, but it would not heat up anymore.  It was a very sad day for me when this happened.  But, as they say in show business….the show must go on.

Buttermilk Pancake Recipe From Scratch

My friend, also Amanda, shared her buttermilk pancake recipe with me.  And it’s made from scratch!

I can’t stand premix pancake mixes, unless it is from Smitty’s.  But they can get expensive, too, and don’t really make that much.  I’m cheap.  Scratch is better, and I know exactly what is going into it.

I usually have to double this recipe cause they go like hotcakes!  Pun intended, sorry!

Amanda’s Buttermilk Pancakes

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk

No Bake Desserts

I love baking, but a no-bake dessert can sometimes be even more delicious.

For example, my mother-in-law’s flapper pie, my peanut butter cheesecake (oh, I should make that today!), my co-worker Yvonne’s cheesecake, cuban lunch bites, caramel popcorn.  Let me share these with you so you can enjoy too!

Yvonne’s Cheesecake


  • 1 cup sifted icing sugar
  • 1 tub cool whip (I don’t actually like to use the whole tub, but I like my cheesecake a bit thicker)
  • 1 block cream cheese (250 g)
  • 2/3 cup graham or oreo crumbs (I prefer the oreo crumbs)
  • 2 Tbsp margarine

Directionseasy cheesecake

  1. Melt margarine and add to crumbs. Mix well.
  2. Press into an 8×8 pan.
  3. Whip cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl.
  4. Add icing sugar and cool whip.  Mix well.
  5. Scrape filling onto crust.
  6. Serve immediately, or refrigerate.

I like to top with fresh cut strawberries, but you can eat as-is, use your favourite pie filling (cherry, for example), or any type of fruit would work I guess.  This is so easy, and well worth it.


Cuban Lunch


  • 1 package semi-sweet chocolate chippits
  • 1 package peanut butter chippits
  • 1 package butterscotch chippits
  • 2 cups crushed peanuts
  • 2 cups crushed ripple chips


  1. Place the chippits in a medium to large bowl.  Melt the chippits in the microwave for about 2 minutes, stirring about the minute mark.
  2. Add the crushed peanuts and ripple chips to the chippits.
  3. Stir well.
  4. Spoon into small paper cups and refrigerate.
  5. Enjoy!

Caramel Popcorn

Ingredientscaramel popcorn

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • ½ cup corn syrup
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup raw popcorn


  1. Pop your corn!  (I like my whirley-pop stovetop popper)
  2. In large pot, melt butter. Mix in brown sugar, corn syrup and salt.
  3. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil without stirring for 5 minutes and remove from heat.
  4. Stir in baking soda and vanilla.
  5. Pour slowly over popped corn. Mix well. That’s it if you want the gooey!
  6. If you want baked…simply bake at 250 degrees for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Equally as delicious!

Flapper Pie From Heaven

This recipe is from my mother-in-law Betty who is actually up in heaven.  She made the best flapper pie, and apparently so did her mom.

I cheat a bit with it, as I do not make the graham crust from scratch.  I simply buy the pre-made graham crust from the store.  It is still delicious.  I actually even made this last night.

Flapper Pie


  • 1 1/2 cups graham crumbspre-made crust
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of cinnamon

Mix together in a bowl and press into a pie plate.  I like to also brush a light coating of egg white over the crust and bake at 375 degrees for 5 minutes and set aside to cool.


  • 1/2 cup sugarstirring while it thickens
  • 4 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Mix ingredients in a medium sized pot and heat on medium.  Stir constantly until quite thick.

Pour into crust and let sit to cool.

Licking the bowl is the best!

Food is my absolute favourite thing.  I like the ingredients, the our youngest boyprocedures and preparing, the aromas, the licking of the bowls (if it’s baking, of course….not meat!)

This is my recipe book that I made from a photo album that I bought at Walmart.  It has two sleeves on each page that fit a recipe card just perfectly.  I love it.  It used to have a little strap on the side to keep it closed properly, but it slipped off because it is so full.  Oh well, no strap it is.

I have it sectioned off into categories, but not really very organized.  The beauty of it is that if my recipe bookI really decide it needs to be more organized, it wouldn’t take long to do it.  I have my desserts, cookies and cakes first.  Then the meats.  Then some miscellaneous recipes….then canning, and salads.  But I always seem to find what I’m looking for so as long as it’s not broken…

I watched Julie & Julia a few years ago and it became my top movie to watch.

It didn’t exactly inspire me to blog about my time in the kitchen per say, but I became more in tune with myself and really enjoyed it that much more.  I even made my husband buy me Mastering the Art of French Cooking.  He thought the movie was horrible, but he sure didn’t complain when he had a bountiful helping of Julia Child’s boeuf bourguignon.

I can remember when my kids watched the movie with me and they kept repeating in her accent “boeuf bourguignon.”  It drove my husband crazy, listening to us all in our silly accents.  We had such a great time!

I also like my kitchen accessories, such as mixing bowls, blenders, and other gadgets.  My favourite mixing bowl is in shown below, that can be purchased at
